As I lay in the cool, wet snow, I felt frustrated, useless and ready to give up. I had tried unsuccessfully and failed yet again to stand up on my snowboard. I just couldn’t do it and I kept telling myself this over and over again in my mind. I glanced back up the mountain and found that I had only travelled a couple of meters before falling again and I couldn’t see the end of the mountain due to the persistent fog. It appeared that I was in the middle of nowhere. How could I possibly “begin with the end in mind” if I had absolutely no idea where the end was? This just made everything seem a whole lot worse.
Looking back on this now, I know that I would not have made it down that mountain without the help of Tiffany. She stayed with me the whole way and offered me the support and encouragement that I needed. Although at first I could barely advance a few meters, by the time I reached the bottom I was able to progress forward unassisted virtually unscathed.
By the end of that day I knew that I had improved substantially since my first attempt. When I realised how far I had come I began to enjoy myself more. Throughout the next couple of days I felt more confident and I eventually made it down the mountain without stacking once!
The main thing I learnt throughout this experience was to never give up even when things are tough. When you fall down, you need pick yourself up and try again. Also, I learnt that it’s a good idea not to insult my teachers even when I accidentally and unintentionally call them ‘fat’. :D
